Healthy Blueberry Melon Smoothie Recipe
This refreshing blueberry melon smoothie is a great way to use fresh garden produce in the summer, or add frozen fruit instead and enjoy it anytime of the year! We grow a lot of melons in our garden, and love incorporating them in smoothies. One of our favorites is this blueberry melon recipe because it’s delicious and the fruit is so sweet you don’t need to add any additional sugar. We freeze all of our extra melons, and use them throughout the winter, spring, and early summer until the next harvest is ready.
What is a smoothie?
A smoothie is a thick beverage consisting of fruits, vegetables, milk, yogurt, or other ingredients that are pureed in a high-speed blender. You can use different types of liquid as a base including fruit juice, coconut water, or ice cubes. Smoothies are made with nutritious ingredients which makes them a great source of vitamin c, healthy fats, and good carbs. Green smoothies have an abundance of fresh leafy greens such as kale or spinach.
What are the best sweeteners for smoothies?
If you’re making a fruit smoothie, then adding a sweetener usually isn’t necessary because most fruit contains enough sugar to make the smoothie sweet. However, for an extra bit of sweetness try adding a tablespoon or two of honey or maple syrup.
Blueberry Melon Smoothie Ingredients
Liquid Base
3 cups Milk– I use whole raw milk, but you could use a any type of milk or milk substitute for dairy allergies.
1 cup Yogurt– Plain or greek yogurt is a good protein source (optional).
(Fruit juice, coconut water, or ice cubes could be substituted for a dairy free version.)
What’s important here is that you use 4 cups total of liquid. If you like a thinner smoothie, skip the yogurt and add an additional cup of milk, etc. If you like your smoothies a bit thicker, then replace some of the milk with more yogurt instead.
Fruit
4 cups Melon– Any type of musk melon would work. We grow several varieties including cantaloupe, charentais, madhu ras, and banana melons. Honeydew melon would work too.
2 cups Blueberries– Use fresh berries or frozen ones work too.
Sweetener
It’s definitely not necessary, but feel free to add some honey or maple syrup. I love buying honey in bulk from Azure Standard.
How much does this recipe make?
This makes about 9 cups total in our blender, which is up to the max fill line. If you don’t need that much, try cutting the amounts listed in the recipe by half.
Step-by-step instructions of how to make this blueberry melon smoothie
First, cube the melon and then put it in a blender.
Next, add blueberries to the blender on top of the melon.
Pour the milk or liquid of choice into the blender.
Mix on low speed until the fruit is pureed. Next, add the yogurt. Blend on medium speed, and then on high speed until fully liquified. The smoothie mixture will be aerated from blending and have lots of bubbles initially.
Pour into individual glasses, and enjoy!
How to store leftover smoothies
Smoothies are best enjoyed right away while they’re fresh. They lose volume if left sitting for very long, and don’t keep well in the fridge. If you have some left over then you could freeze it in popsicle trays for a yummy treat!
Variation
You could also make a watermelon blueberry smoothie by replacing the muskmelon with watermelon chunks instead. I will try this next time with some frozen watermelon we have from last year’s garden.
I hope you enjoy this easy blueberry melon smoothie recipe for a cold refreshing drink that is both healthy and delicious!
